  • + Description

Ecobox is an experimental project for an eco-friendly newsstand. The aim is to improve indoor comfort for people working in small kiosks. The materials are ecological: a timber frame structure with plant-based insulation (wood fibre or cellulose). These choices, typical of a sustainable approach, ensure high energy savings, high performance and an ideal microclimate for those working inside. The high thermal inertia of the structure, combined with natural ventilation, also ensures excellent performance in summer. The outside is clad in larch boards treated with plant-based, petroleum-free finishes; inside, plasterboard was replaced by gypsum fibreboard (gypsum and cellulose fibre), and the few metal parts are stainless steel. The design of the shell is integrated with the furniture to make ergonomic use of every inch of space, in birch plywood, glass and stainless steel. The display racks vary in size to suit different needs and can easily hold large-format magazines. Energy saving and renewable energy are among the most important aspects of the project. Daylight comes from a tubular skylight that captures natural light and carries it into darker spaces; its quality does not alter the colours of the items on display and is easier on the eyes. Heating is provided by infrared lamps: radiant heat improves air quality because it avoids overheating and stirring up dust. Ecobox is the first wooden newsstand built in Varese; green building and sustainability are the key features of this little timber house and, more generally, of LCA's design approach.
