+ Description
In this project the almost exclusive use of wood as the building material is the key design choice in terms of quantity (5,000 cubic metres), environment, quality and communication, since it also shows on the outside the company's business: wooden packaging. Minimising land use, prefabrication, sustainability, energy saving and natural, renewable materials such as wood and cellulose are central to the project. The Novello srl industrial building, designed by others, is the first of its kind in Italy and one of the few of this size in Europe. Novello srl commissioned LCA to design the south and west façades. The main goal was to express the building's high sustainability value, and this was achieved by conveying the concept architecturally through the design of the main façades (west and south). These face busy roads: the A8 "Laghi" motorway to the west and provincial road 20 to the south. The west façade along the motorway aims to communicate the company's business – logistics and wooden packaging. This led to the idea of multiplying the "box" along the A8 front, reshaping the typical sawtooth profile of the sheds without denying it and making it more contemporary through the sculptural treatment of its walls. Seven large boxes follow one another with great elegance, creating a rhythmic architecture that, by contrast, seems to float above the deep shadow of the 4-metre cantilevered canopy below. The south façade, by contrast, is linear and entirely clad in larch boards. Overall, given its size, the project is one of the largest examples in our region of a prefabricated, eco-friendly and sustainable timber industrial building.
